Wellington Pit Receives OSSGA’s Progressive Rehabilitation Award
Capital Paving’s Wellington Pit in the Township of Puslinch has received OSSGA’s 2020 Progressive Rehabilitation Award, presented at OSSGA’s 2021 Conference & AGM at the end of February.
Wellington Pit’s recent restoration work took place from April 2020 to May 2020 and included rehabilitating 8.28 hectares for agricultural use. As part of the overall plan, four of the site’s small ponds are being retained to serve as irrigation for the agricultural fields. As well, three hectares of land in the centre of the area have been reforested to link wooded areas to the west of the site with the Country of Wellington’s Little Tract forest that runs along the east boundary of the pit. The aim of this effort is to create a wildlife corridor. Moving forward, there are plans to grow an assortment of crops on the remainder of the rehabilitated land, which for several years now has been used to grow soybeans and corn.
“We are extremely proud and honored to be awarded the progressive rehabilitation award again for our efforts to restore our Wellington Pit to productive farmland,” said George Lourenco, Resources Manager, Capital Paving. “Our company has always been dedicated to quality, not only in our construction projects and asphalt operations, but also in the lasting legacy we leave behind after we have finished extraction at our aggregate sites to useful productive agricultural fields.”
Progressive Rehabilitation Award
The Progressive Rehabilitation Award recognizes the ongoing efforts of individual operators to progressively rehabilitate their sites in accordance with their site plans.
OSSGA Industry Recognition Awards Program
The OSSGA Industry Recognition Awards Program recognizes a wide range of activities that contribute to a progressive image of our member aggregate producers and the aggregate industry as a whole. A key goal is to raise the bar in the industry by highlighting operations that go above and beyond what is required by legislation.
“We encourage each member to be sound stewards of the lands on which they operate, and to be engaged and valued members of their community,” said Norm Cheesman, Executive Director of OSSGA. “All of OSSGA’s 2020 award winners have met and exceeded those expectations.”
