Aberfoyle School Cardboard Boat Teams in Top Half of Provincial Championship
Congratulations to members of both Aberfoyle School Cardboard Boat Teams for their superb efforts and fine results at the Skills Ontario Provincial Cardboard Boat Championships for intermediate-grade students on March 6.
The event was held at the Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex where 112 grade seven and grade eight students in 28 teams of four from across Ontario gathered. The day began with a two-hour boat build on a dry floor surface. In the afternoon there was a speed and weight challenge in pool water. Teams had to pre-design their boats prior to the competition, answer questions about nine essential skills and decorate their boats in a chosen theme after construction. Boat decorations were removed prior to the speed and weight challenges.
Total weights were determined by adding the weight of all team members plus volunteer members from other teams who were able to sit in the boat and hold the weight for at least 60 seconds. Aberfoyle Team 1 reached a maximum weight of 500 pounds or 227 kilos and Aberfoyle Team 2 reached a maximum weight of 480 pounds or 218 kilos. Aberfoyle Team 1 placed 13th with a total score of 48 points and Aberfoyle Team 1 placed 15th with a total score of 44 points. To qualify for participation in the provincial championships, teams had to place in the top three positions at regional cardboard boat contests held in pools around the province since early November.
