McLEOD, Rachel

Kiln Farm

After a remarkable life of 97 years filled with energy, courage and love, Rachel McLeod died peacefully on February 14, 2018 at Wellington Terrace.

Rachel was born to Louis and Beatrice (Waddington) Edmonds in Yorkshire, England where she spent her childhood. She had a lifelong interest in plants and nature and went on to receive her MA in biology from the University of Cambridge. She married John Norman (Ian) McLeod in 1941 and in 1952 they immigrated to Canada with their growing family. After several years in St. John’s, Nfld, they moved to Aldershot, Burlington where Rachel began to volunteer with the Royal Botanical Gardens. She became an expert flower arranger and judge and was instrumental in developing a teaching garden there.

In 1966 Rachel and Ian moved to a country property – Kiln Farm. The farm was a picturesque home for Rachel and Ian for more than 50 years and a place where her energy and creativity could flourish. She built a herb garden and taught courses. She traveled as a lecturer and her horticultural expertise was featured on radio and television, and in magazines. As a member of The Garden Writers of America, she wrote weekly and monthly gardening articles for several periodicals. She was an active member of her community, helping to organize initiatives to protect the environment and ensure proper land use. Through it all, Rachel built a home and a neighbourhood at Kiln Farm, hosting dinners, bridge games and book clubs. Rachel’s home was always open and welcoming to family and friends.

Towards the end of her life, Rachel said that she was most proud of her children and being “Granny” to her grandchildren. Rachel leaves a family and many friends grateful for having known her.

Predeceased by her husband Ian, she will be lovingly remembered by her children, Alastair, Ken, Oliver (Susan), Jeannie (Bob), eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
