Crime Stoppers Releases 2017 Statistics
Once more, the statistics prove that Crime Stoppers works in the City of Guelph and County of
Wellington.
Last year, 725 calls and web tips were received by Crime Stoppers Guelph Wellington (CSGW),
which is an increase from 2016. While not a police organization, CSGW works with Wellington
County OPP and Guelph Police Service by offering a safe, anonymous method for the public to
report information that could lead to arrests in local criminal acts. As a result of the tips
provided, 12 cases were cleared in 2017, resulting in 40 charges being laid.
“We can’t discuss the specific cases that are solved because of Crime Stoppers Tipsters, but we
can talk about our statistics,” observed Sarah Bowers-Peter, Program Coordinator for CSGW. “It
is also safe to say our Tipsters have solved crimes in all areas of the Count of Wellington and
City of Guelph”
Since the program started locally in 1988, more than $10 million in personal property has been
recovered, with more than $27 million in illegal drugs being seized as a result of Tipster
information. The Board of Directors has approved $164,770 in rewards to Tipsters since it was
founded.
With January feting Crime Stoppers Month, and 2018 marking the 30th Anniversary of CSGW,
Bowers-Peter feels there is even more to celebrate.
“Every crime that is solved because of a Tipster coming forward is something to celebrate,” said
Bowers-Peter. “It’s not easy to report information and we know that these Tipsters are trying to
make their communities better places.”
The program, which is an alternative to reporting directly to police, accepts tip information via
www.csgw.tips as well as by calling 1-800-222-TIPS. Book your presentation to learn how Crime
Stoppers can work in your community.
