MORRISTON CORRESPONDENCE

May 15, 1894

Church Notes – The German Evangelical Church will hold its regular quarterly services on Saturday and Sunday next in the church here. The meetings will be conducted by Rev. W. L. Wing of Berlin and Rev. J. Wilhelm, paster in charge. The services will be as follows: Saturday 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., Sunday 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. Evening services will be held in English. There will likely be a very large attendance at these meetings, especially during the evening services, the new pastor having already preached very eloquently in English. In the German, he has also deeply impressed that community, being a very able discourser.

Duff’s Church Notes – Communion will be served the last Sunday of the month. It is expected that Rev. Dr. McKay will be able to be present. It is to be hoped that the Reverend Doctor will be present, as he has a great number of cordial friends who are already looking forward to the meetings. Besides the communion, there will be preparatory services.

Lodge and Courts – The United Workmen are progressing, numerous new members having received their degrees during the winter. Court Puslinch, Independent Order of Foresters has had an extraordinary boom during the winter and it still seems to keep on. The Court here has always been to the lead, being the first fraternal society established in this section. The High Chief Ranger will make his visit to the Court Friday evening, at which a very large attendance is expected, there being a special meeting called for the occasion.

Sons of Scotland – The Sons of Scotland, although a new society in this district, have started out with a most enviable record, no less than 25 being charter members. The lodge is now some 35 in membership but Scots wha ha’e is predominant here and there is no reason why this lodge should not have a big membership a few months hence.

The Boom Continues – Besides the two new factories, other additions have been made to the village. Among the latest are Dr. Walter Telfer, veterinary surgeon, who has settled here and R. McGinnis, the carpet weaver. Dr. Telfer is a graduate of the Ontario Veterinary College and comes highly recommended. Mr. McGinnis will shortly put his card in the Mercury and promises great improvements in the style of patterns.

Notes – A heavy frost with thin ice last night. No damage done…..J. A. Macdonald and R. C. Morrison had signs erected. R. C. Morrison has been appointed agent for the Canadian Pacific Railway Telegraph Company and the office is now open for business…..Members’ tickets for the Puslinch Agricultural Show may now be obtained from R. C. Morrison, he having been appointed an honorary member of the Association…..Dr. Howitt is able to be around again but is still weak…..The Post Office Inspector visited the village Monday.

Football – The Junior Stars played Freelton Saturday last and were defeated by the score of 1 to 0. They worked hard but the inevitable was against them. When they get a little more hard work at practice in, they intend to challenge the county. The seniors will play Waterdown in Carlisle on the 24th. This will be the big attraction that day for Morriston.
