Local students paddle for gold in cardboard boats
More than 100 students from Guelph and the surrounding areas raced across the surface of Centennial Pool on Friday afternoon, with nothing between them and the water but some cardboard and duct tape.
The Skills Ontario Cardboard Boat Races, which have been going on for nearly 20 years, are meant to introduce students to skills such as construction, building, planning and design, and teamwork, all with a focus on hands-on learning.
“That’s one of the biggest things we try to promote,” Skills Ontario liaison officer Lindsay Chester said of the hands-on experience.
The 36 teams — Grade 7s and 8s from the Upper Grand District School Board, the Wellington Catholic District School Board and the Halton Catholic District School Board — were given two hours in the morning to construct their boats using only two sheets of cardboard and four rolls of duct tape.
