Early farmhouse in Guelph to be designated for heritage
A farmhouse built around 1850 in what’s now the south end of Guelph, which is being converted to a community centre for residents of a new subdivision, is to be protected through designation under the Ontario Heritage Act.
The Hart farmhouse meets all three criteria – design, historical and contextual value – used when assessing whether a building merits designation, says a report that goes to the Nov. 7 meeting of council’s Committee of the Whole.
Now located south of Kortright Road West and east of Rickson Road, the two-storey house built using “vernacular Neo-Classic style” is one of the oldest surviving farmhouses in Guelph or Puslinch Township. It is also one of very few remaining log houses in the area, the report says.
