Guelph Says Arkell Springs Project Will Meet Growing Demand For Water

Workers from the contracting company Xterra put finishing touches on a new trench system in the Arkell Spring Grounds, east of Arkell, last Thursday. The trench will take water pumped from the Eramosa River and filter it through the ground to the Arkell Glen — a deep ravine — before it’s collected by the main water system. The initiative is part of the City of Guelph’s plan to increase water supply to support a population projected to reach 190,000 by 2038.

Six deep wells, scattered across a 350-hectare property in Puslinch Township, near the Starkey Hill Trail, is part of the latest effort by the City of Guelph to increase water flows and meet growing demand for drinking water in this city.

The Arkell Springs project is one of several measures outlined in the 2014 Water Supply Master Plan to meet future demands for a population that’s expected to reach nearly 190,000 by the year 2038.

According to the WSMP, at the rate Guelph is going, demand would exceed current supply by 2023.
