Dialysis Fundraiser for McMaster Sick Children’s Hospital – January 29th
Looking for something new and different to do on a coooold Friday night in January? I would like to invite Puslinch to show their support on Friday, January 29th for children needing dialysis at McMaster Sick Children’s hospital. Tickets are $25 which will include a spaghetti supper, non-alcoholics drinks. There will be a cash bar too. The evening will also feature stag-and-doe-like games, a silent auction, dancing and a poker tournament. No gambling. Prizes are awarded for top players. The fundraiser will be held at the Puslinch Community Centre.
Why dialysis? Did you know a young resident of Puslinch, Addison Prickett, ended up needing the life-saving dialysis treatment after a simple surgery changed his life? His kidneys were dead… not a single-living cell in them. He was rushed down to McMaster to receive treatment. That was four years ago. While he was there, we learned they use adult dialysis machines on children, which means a nurse has to be there to monitor the treatment — no nurse means no treatment.
The Nephrology unit at McMaster has children needing dialysis from Guelph, Kitchener Waterloo and as far as Fort Erie. These parents make a trip to McMaster every other day to make sure their children receive dialysis.
Addison was fortunate and received nothing short of a miracle at the time. His kidneys started to function again to the point where he no longer required dialysis. Doctors could not explain it other than a miracle. As a thank you, he asked his mom if they could figure out a way to get the kids a dialysis unit meant for children so they wouldn’t have to go without treatment should no nurse be available.
Now four years later, an Addison update: the function of his kidneys have deteriorated to the point where he now needs a transplant and his blood levels are only 1% away from needing dialysis again. Help us help Addison achieve the thank you he wanted to give McMaster… two new dialysis machines for children.
