Save Your Photos Day: Protect your memories in support of the Alzheimer Society
Photos are the stories of our lives, but in the blink of an eye, years of memories could all disappear or be destroyed. Photo organizing companies Snap Shot Solutions of Puslinch and M is for Memories of St. Clements team up to host Ontario’s only registered Save Your Photos Day event on Saturday, September 26 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Badenoch Community Centre in Puslinch.
Save Your Photos Day is an international event hosted annually by the Association of Personal Photo Organizers (APPO), which encourages everyone to take steps to safeguard their photographs before disasters or accidents happen since photos are our most cherished possessions.
“Too many people are overwhelmed with the task of managing their personal photo collections,” said Daina Makinson, Certified Photo Organizer and founder of Snap Shot Solutions. “I recently heard from a woman in Burlington who was devastated when she lost all her family photos in last year’s sewer backup flood. While she feels hopeless, there are ways to recover some of those stories. Save Your Photos Day is all about educating people on how to avoid telling a similar story about someone losing their photos.”
Throughout the day, knowledgeable guest speakers will discuss how to preserve and protect photos as well as provide great ideas on ways to share and enjoy those precious family life stories. Additionally, attendees of Save Your Photos Day will be treated to 50 complimentary photo scans plus there will be a photographer on hand offering kids’ portraits at no charge. With a raffle for some great prizes on the agenda, it will be a fun-filled family day.
While admission is free, free-will donations will be gratefully accepted as a goal of the event will also be to raise funds for the Alzheimer Society Waterloo Wellington, which offers a variety of services to support people with Mild Cognitive Impairment, Alzheimer’s disease, and other dementias.
“Research and experience support the value of reminiscence, and photos are an excellent method to do this,” said Robin Smart, Education Coordinator at the Alzheimer Society Waterloo Wellington. “A picture can help spark happy memories and conversation, and having a physical picture in your hand not only allows someone with memory loss an easy way to revisit familiar faces and places, it gives a surface on which to provide some cues and information about the photo.”
Smart also notes that one of the best ways to support people with dementia is to enjoy photo albums with them.
Everyone who attends Save Your Photos Day will also go home with tips on how they can take better photos, manage them wisely and find them with ease. But most importantly, attendees will learn how to keep their boxes of print photos or even their thousands of digital photos hiding on computers or smartphones safe.
