User Pay Garbage Bag Service Fee Increase For Wellington County

Garbage

The County of Wellington’s Solid Waste Services Division announces upcoming changes to user pay garbage bag fees, effective July 1. The fee increase was deemed necessary to ensure the continued provision of high-quality waste management services to residents across the County.

Fee Increases:

  • Large User Bag: from $2.00 to $2.50 each
  • Small User Bags: from $1.50 to $2.00 each
  • Bag Fee at Waste Facility Sites: from $2.00 to $2.50 (no charge if garbage is in yellow userpay bags)

“Costs in most sectors, including manufacturing, have increased significantly since the last fee increase in 2016,” said Warden Andy Lennox. “The County is committed to maintaining best waste management practices and ensuring efficient operations while preserving environmental integrity.

“User pay systems are considered a best practice for waste management as there is more incentive to reduce waste and divert materials away from landfill into organics and recycling streams.

“Wellington County keeps fees lower than other municipalities which use a similar user pay system, funding waste disposal through a combination of taxation and individual fees,” commented Councillor Stephen O’Neill, Solid Waste Services Committee Chair. “This approach ensures fairness and accountability, as residents pay for the waste they generate. By reducing waste at home, individuals can effectively manage their disposal costs, promoting responsible environmental stewardship within our community.

“Wellington County Solid Waste Services Division remains dedicated to providing transparent and sustainable waste management solutions that benefit both residents and the environment.
